Planet asked: An internationally recognized expert on artificial intelligence, David Levy, claims that within five years they’ll be able to manufacture robots that we can have both an emotional and sexual relationship with. Do you think this cutting-edge research will change the course of our cultural history? The robots will be programmable to every type of sex available and the full range of emotions of our choice. Mr. Levy says it will cut down on abusive sexual human interaction because the robots can take the place of an unwilling partner. If these robots truly do become Best Buys specials and widely available, how do you think it will effect civilization if we don’t have to interact with each other to receive love and sex? Would you want a Mr.or Mrs. Stepford in your life? What if our robots have affairs with your best friend’s robot? Would you watch or get angry?

Mr. Levy says they will be available in five years but it will take until the middle of the century before they will be cheap enough to that everyone can own one.

I’m currently in love and actively sexual with a cybertronian woman, which could be called a robot, as with me.

As long as it’s consensual, I don’t see the problem. If a robot becomes self-aware, it might as well be a person.
Sounds like the prostitution industry will have competition.

daz like makin luv to a computer or television n the risk of givin yu seizure or mechanical diseases

That’s funny! I’d get one for my hubby on his birthday. I’m also assuming they will make both a male and female version so maybe I’d get one and we can make them play with each other. I want them also to make robotic pets. Then you can just shut them down if you have to go traveling.
It might take the “romance” out of the whole thing when you have to clean her out yourself (if you know what I mean). Wouldn’t that sort of gunk up the internals? EWwww. Can you imagine buying a used one? Hehehe.
Edit: The rapists probably won’t be able to afford one. A prostitute is still cheaper.

* Lenina Huxley: I was wondering if you would like to have sex?
* John Spartan: [surprised] Here? With you? Now?
* Lenina Huxley: [nervously, nodding] Mm-hmm.
* John Spartan: Oh yeah.
[after futuristic, contact-free "sex"]
* John Spartan: Look, Huxley, why don’t we just do it the old-fashioned way?
* Lenina Huxley: [stands up, shocked] Eeewww, disgusting! You mean… *fluid transfer*? [Stamping her foot] You are a savage creature John Spartan, and I wish for you to leave my domicile now!

lol…puss.
i heard about this too. intriguing is it not? i wonder though, if it would be a satisfactory substitute for a rapist. i guess we will soon know if rape is about power or if it is about sex.

I really doubt these robots would seem real enough to take the place of a husband or wife in an emotional way. As a glorified sex toy, maybe. It will respond to us emotionally by how we program them. Exactly. It would be like trying to have a relationship with a computer program. You say one thing, the robot will find the appropriate response according to how it was programmed. I think that at our stage of development in artificial intelligence and robotics that it would merely be a toy. There is no way possible that we are anywhere close to creating a self aware robot that can “think” for itself. Intelligence right now is completely simulated. Trying to get a robot to do even a simple thing right now is very hard. We have Osimo who can walk very well. And we have robots that appear to have human facial movements and simulated emotional response, but to put these two things together might take more than five years. I might be wrong about the time it will take, but I guarantee the robot will become very predictable after awhile with how it acts and responds.

No thanks! my girlfriend doesn’t know what I’m talking about half the time, so a robot would have no chance

Hey, I take robots over the whinny, privileges, Western feminist women any day..

I guess for those people who can’t get dates, then a robot is good.
I saw Mr. Levy on The Colbert Report the other night talking about his book.
You can receive sex from these robots, and someone may feel love for the robot, but you can’t receive love from a robot. That’s most of the interest for me, receiving love in addition to sex.
I asked my boyfriend whether having sex with a robot would be cheating on each other. He said in the physical sense he would consider it cheating, but not in the emotional sense, in that you don’t love a robot.

Are we really getting that desperate for companionship? Do we have to resort to robotics instead of personal change?

I don’t think it will be as popular the author of the book suggests. There is a lot more to love and relationships than just the “mechanics” of sex. There is scent, pheromones, and our biological drive to procreate. A machine can never replace that.

I think robots are hot!
I like the metallic look. The more rivets the better

Women do this already. Sales of vibrators and dildos are in the millions.
The notion of a sexy robot will be very attractive to males. Why bother getting married so that she can turn off sex and you still have to pay her so you can be celibate? With a robot, the sex goes on and on until the batteries need recharging. What bloke wouldn’t like that? Imagine a device that makes love to you more than the one that is supposed to be madly in love with you.
There are lots of other pluses too. You can swap your robot with your mate. You can pass on old robots to your sons.

That’s very intersting, I had no idea they were that advance. Hmm, I don’t think you could have an emotional relationship with something that isn’t real and doesn’t have a soul.
I think it would probably make a lot of people happy who just like casual sex or can’t get a partner. Also, it may cut down the amount of rapes?
I personally wouldn’t want one unless they made it look exactly like Johnny Depp.
Robot Comparisons
It would be too impersonal and way weird. I’m a human and prefer a relationship with another human. The robot could take care of cleaning the house, playing with the dog, cleaning up dog poop, doing dishes, the laundry, etc. but when it comes to my emotional and erotic needs I’ll stick with an actual person. But I wish Mr. Levy well and hope he enjoys his romance with his robot.
